The National Commission on Culture (NCC) was established by the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) Law 238 of 1990 to manage from a holistic perspective, the Culture Life of the people of Ghana. In accordance with its institutional mandate, article 2 of the law prescribes the following functions:

Initiate policies and programmes for the dissemination and propagation of ideas for the promotion of national pride, integration, solidarity, patriotism, and consciousness.

Supervise the implementation of programmes for the development, preservation, promotion, and presentation of Ghanaian culture.

Promote an education system that motivates and stimulates creativity and draws largely on Ghanaian traditions and values.

Establish a code of behaviour compatible with Ghanaian tradition of humanism and a disciplined and moral society.

Promote national self-reliance and self-sufficiency and reflect Ghanaian cultural heritage and national aspiration in the process of industrialization.

Facilitate the evolution of an integrated national culture which portrays a distinct Ghanaian identity to promote a congenial environment for peaceful development.

Organize Annual Congress of Ghanaian Artists and Cultural Workers.

Coordinate, supervise and regulate the activities and programmes of the various artistic guilds and associations.

Institute studies, research, surveys and analysis into cultural dynamics with the view of performing its advisory role.

Act in liaison and cooperation with government agencies, metropolitan/ municipal/ district authorities and other public or private institutions in the development, promotion, presentation and preservation of the peculiar cultural heritage of the communities.

Collaborate with foreign and international agencies as the Commission considers necessary for the purposes of this Act.

Perform such other functions as may be prescribed by law.

Vision

To respect, preserve, harness and use cultural heritage and resources to develop a united, vibrant and a prosperous national community with a distinctive African identity and personality and collective confidence and pride of place among the comity of nations.

Mission

The National Commission on Culture is to maintain the unique cultural identity and values for the promotion of an integrated national culture, as well as contribute to the overall economic development of the nation.

Mandate

The National Commission on Culture was established by the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) law 238 of 1990 to manage from a holistic perspective of the Cultural life of our country Ghana. It is an implementation body under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture charged with the responsibility of ensuring the implementation of
the culture policy of Ghana.
